Horrorpunk från Tyskland, kan det vara något? Jo men jag tycker det även om skivan känns uppdelad i två delar. Skivan innehåller fyra låtar och de två första låter väldigt mycket amerikansk punk typ Social Distorion och The Distillers, ja det finns likheter i sången mellan Brody Dalle och We'refolfs sångerska Lizsanity Vironess. 

De två andra låtarna däremot har starkare spår av horrorock i sig. "Jill Valentine" har en fin touch av monsterpsychobilly och är nog skivans bästa låt. Den avslutande "Rest in pieces" är inte heller dum där whooo-partiet lyfter låten enormt, den är faktiskt riktigt bra. 

We'rewolf är utan tvekan ett intressant band och jag tror faktiskt att de har ännu mer att ge framöver. Gillar man Misfits, Rancid och Social Distortion och liknande band samt har ett tycke för skräcktexter bör man absolut ge We'rewolf en chans. De fyra låtarna har en speltid på nästan 14 minuter.

Här har vi en split-sjua där Österrike möter Finland i en riktig poppunkexplosion där influenserna förmodligen hämtats från 90-talets Amerika. Glue Crew representerar Österrike och de ska tydligen sjunga på riktig Salzburg-dialekt, i mina öron är det dock bara tyska och det är egentligen inte så bara. Det låter nästan bättre än den där amerikanska college-smörjan. 

Jag kan tänka mig att Glue Crew har lyssnat både en och två gånger på Bodyjar och No Use For A Name. Det är ungefär i den myllan det hela landar. Deras två låtar är förvisso lite småtrevliga men jag saknar attityd. "San Andreas" är dock mycket bättre än "Tequila Tampons". 

På den finska sidan hittar vi Checking Line och jag är ju inte sådär överdrivet förtjust i amerikansk collegepunk. Yellowcard, Good Charlotte osv, där har min gräns redan passerat. Det som gör att jag ändå kan lyssna på Checking Line är att ljudet är med garage än lyxig studio i Los Angeles och att det är lite falskt här och där. Sen tycker jag även att deras texter är ganska roliga. Men i det stora hela är det väldigt snällt.  

De här fyra låtarna är pressade på gul vinyl och även om inte jag riktigt hittar något spännande tycker jag att man kan kolla upp båda banden om man har en fäbless för amerikansk poppunk.

För ett par år sedan hyllade jag finska Cause A Riot när de släppte kassetten som går under namnet EP 2. Nu är de tillbaka med sitt andra album och det finns ingen anledning att inte fortsätta hylla dem. Om man jämför kassetten med det här albumet är produktionen lite snyggare men deras hardcorepunk håller exakt samma mäktiga klass. Det är rejält med mollbetonade slingor, väldigt tight och i ett härligt tempo.
 

Jag måste erkänna att jag har dålig koll på band som spelar den här modernare formen av hardcorepunk med väldigt lätta emotendenser, men vem behöver andra band när Cause A Riot finns? Final Broadcast är som en boxare som bara matar högerkrok efter högerkrok. Dessutom sjunger Simo brutalt bra och desperat.  

Det här är guld för alla som gillar melodiös hc med många riff, starka refränger och en stenhård attityd. Det går inte att plocka ut en favoritlåt då hela albumet håller sådan hög klass. Med kniven mot strupen skulle jag nog ändå säga "Bombs Away", kanske mest för rock n roll-slingan som dyker upp i tre sekunder mitt i låten vilket är en briljant detalj. De 9 låtarna klockar in på 26 underbara minuter.

Det enda jag vet om Ett Steg Närmare Döden är att de är från Småland. Så den här EPn är mitt första möte med bandet och det blev ett trevligt sådant. Första låten "Ett svart hål"  känns ganska originell och trots att det handlar om ganska vanlig svensk punk lyfter låten rejält på grund av gitarrspelet och den starka refrängen. Det är helt klart skivans bästa låt.

Kan man kalla gitarrerna för emoinfluerade? Ja jag skulle vilja säga det. Det är svårt att verkligen förklara med ord, det måste höras. Och låt inte ordet emo avskräcka. Melodierna är både molliga och bra och överlag bjuder Ett Steg Närmare Döden på riktigt ösig punk och det kan man ju inte få nog av. Jag är glad att den här skivan korsade min väg. 

De fyra låtarna klockar in på nästan 11 minuter och har man precis som jag missat detta band bör man kolla upp dom. Känslan man får av musiken påminner en del om Vånna Inget men Ett Steg Närmare Döden är mycket hårdare och punkigare.

Här har vi ett ganska nytt band från Milano, de bildades 2019 och samma år släpptes den här skivan. Jag måste säga att den är helt briljant. Musiken har de hämtat från den tidiga amerikanska hardcorescenen och band som Black Flag, Germs och Circle Jerks. Det låter faktiskt riktigt genuint, hade någon spelat upp Tiki Hangover för mig utan att jag visste vilke de var skulle jag gissat på något band i stil med de redan nämnda. Jag brukar kunna bli lite stressad av stökig hardcore med mycket slingor och snabba taktbyten men det blir jag inte här.

De nio låtarna har en speltid på 15 minuter så det handlar om korta men snärtiga låtar. Det märks att medlemmarna i bandet både känner varandra väl och har spelat tillsammans tidigare för det är väldigt tight och välkomponerat. Ju mer jag lyssnar desto mer sätter sig låtarna och jag vill bara sprida det här till alla som gillar old school hardcore med en hel del melodier.

Hela skivan håller hög klass men jag tycker att det finns ett par låtar som sticker ut lite mer. Några av dessa är ”Disgust”, ”Perseverance” och ”Coal Train”, den sistnämnda med riktigt bra växelsång. Jag blev verkligen glad över den här nya bekantskapen och när ett nytt band släpper en så bra debut ser det utan tvekan lovande ut för framtiden.

This is brilliant old school hardcore from Milano, Italy. Tiki Hangover was formed in 2019 and this is their debut record. It's not hard to hear that bands like Black Flag, Germs and Circle Jerks are important bands to Tiki Hangover. And the sound is actually very genuine.

This record contains 9 tracks and a running time of 15 minutes, so yes, the songs are short but very intense. "Disgust", "Perseverance" and Coal Train are the the songs that stands out most. I hope that people, dedicated to hardcore, will give Tiki Hangover a try, because they are totally awesome.

Śmierć, Drip Feed och nu Dividin The Scene. Stockholm står verkligen för kvalitet när det kommer till punk och hardcore.  D.T.S. släppte en kassett 2018 som jag inte har hört så därav är den här sjuan min första bekantskap med bandet och det här är riktigt bra hardcore. Skivan öppnar så otroligt kraftfullt med "Statement" där det bland annat vrålas ut "Fuck racism and fuck homophobia". 

D.T.S. skulle kunna tryckas in i det tidiga NYHC-facket utan att göra bort sig det minsta, jag tycker att de kan jämföras med till exempel Urban Waste, Youth Of Today. Den råa sången gör ju så klart mycket men tillsammans med en viss stökighet i musiken blir helheten till en riktigt hardcoreexplosion. Jag kan se det framför mig hur ett fullsatt och dyngsvettigt Kafe 44 når riktigt höga höjder när de drar igång titelspåret City Killer, en i mitt tycke fulländad låt. 

De 6 låtarna har en speltid på nästan 10 minuter vilket så klart innebär korta låtar. Det är svårt att lyssna sig mätt på den här skivan, det blir helt enkelt att man får byta sida om och om igen men det gör jag så gärna.

Socialstyrelsen är ett gäng dysterkvistar från Värmland. De har varit igång några år nu och 2016 släppte de sitt album D-Takt för dig som inte orkar mer. Det är en skiva som jag inte hört, därför blev det här min första bekantskap med bandet. Med rädsla för livet innehåller 14 låtar som klockar in på ungefär 21 minuter. Ganska korta låtar vilket jag uppskattar, de lägger full fokus på det som är viktigt istället för onödigt gnidande. 

Socialstyrelsen handlar om tung crustpunk med lagom mycket slingor.Jag gillar att sången är mixad så att man hör vartenda ord som Hanna skriker fram. Hennes röst är riktigt rå och man tror nästan att den ska brista hela tiden men det gör den aldrig. Jag tycker att det finns en bra dynamik mellan de snabba och de långsamma partierna, det finns en viss black metal-känsla när det går lite slöare som i sista låten Finns det något mer? 

Jag vet inte om det faktiskt är så men jag tycker att B-sidan känns mer aggressiv än A-sidan. Visst är det rått hela tiden men jag upplever att A är mer modern crust medan B har mer hardcoretendenser. Med titlar som Misär + Misär, Total Frustration och Bitter på livet förstår ni vad texterna handlar om. Skivan är pressad i 300 ex och jag tycker att man bör ha den i sin samling. 

Review: Drip Feed - Killer!

Drip Feed are as good as always and arguably one of Sweden's most interesting bands. I just love their attitude and their energy is unbeatable. "Killer" is their third EP in three years and I'm longing for a full-length album big time. These two songs are absoluely awesome but I feel that I need more than just two songs at a time. 

In my previous reviews I have compared Drip Feed with bands such as The Exploited and The Casualties and I still think it's a good reference. But their insolent and lovely unpolished sound also brings a couple of japanese streetpunk bands to mind. There's no need to put Drip Feed into specific compartments, this is just pure, honest and raw punk straight from the heart of the streets.    

"Killer" demands to be played loudly. That's how you'll get the most out of it. So if you like high energy punk with good rock and roll riffs, be smart, hurry up and order this EP because there's only 100 copys made. I promise that you won't be disappointed. Oh! I almost forgot to mention the vocals which are so important to how it sounds. Ville's voice are so desperate with a distorted feeling just like the music overall.

A Message To You Records

It's been a while since Spökstan released their latest EP "Hej Kompis". It was actually five years ago. So it was about time that a new release saw the light of day. "Hål i betongen" is their first album and they prove that their material works fine not just on an EP but as an album as well. Spökstan which means Ghost Town are one of the most interesting skaband from Sweden for a very long time. 

Their sound is a result of a mishmash from different styles and different eras. And it's impressive that they keep it all together. It's a mix of british twotone, swedish 80's skamusic and modern reggae. I could refer to a variety of bands for days but I think that all in all they're pretty much close to the american ska band The Toasters. They both challenge the classic ska style and dare to experiment. 

This record contains several potential hit songs but I prefer the more up-tempo songs like "Kniven mot strupen", "Skeva vida värld" and "Parasit". The lyrics are in Swedish but I think that Spökstan works fine even if you just want to dance to nice backbeat music. And nice backbeat music is just what you will get, 12 songs where the last two are live recorded and a running time of 40 minutes.

Flyktsoda is one of the last remaining paper zines hailing from Sweden. And the quality is top notch. Johan the editor has been in the fanzine business since the 90's and really knows how to create an interest in the bands he writes about. The interviews in this issue consists of: Skrammel, Smierc, Grå Vardag, Signal Crimes, Wolf Hour/Döda Katten Podcast, Radar and the exellent label Second Class Kids Records. 

In addition to the interviews there are also reviews and some interesting articles. One is written by Johan himself about his band that celebrates 20 years. Another one is about Jello Biafra post-Dead Kennedys. Flyktsoda provides lot's of good reading as always. 

Flyktsoda is written in Sweden, intended for swedish readers but I can really recommend it to all bands, labels and everyone else who's involved in the DIY/punk scene for promotion, reviews etc. It's so impressive that Johan keeps his enthusiasm up for the DIY scene. 
This issue of Flyktsoda also comes with a bonus CD from Second Class Kids Records. It's a copy of Lastkaj 14 - Becksvart from 2017. Lastkaj 14 is one of the most prominent swedish bands around playing melodic punk. So that's not a bad bonus at all. 

Review: Belta 53 - Om du faller

This is without a doubt the best release from Belta 53 so far. I would describe their earlier style as some kind of punk influenced alternative rock but this record is stuffed with nice melodic pop punk. I was hoping years ago that they would choose this path so I am very satisfied. 

The lyrics are good as always  and especially "En kväll i augusti" which is about the tragic murder of the homeless Romanian guy Gica who lived in a park in Sweden. A stunning rock ballad with lot's of feelings. It's actually a candidate for the best ballad of the year. 

There is something special with female fronted bands and Jojo has a voice that fits perfect to the music. It doens't matter if it's a fast or slow song, she makes it perfect all the time. It's easy to try to comparing other female singers but I can't think of anyone else that sounds like Jojo. 

Belta 53 have their own sound which is pretty Swedish in some way. That's why it's hard to compare them with other bands from around the world. But I would say there's small parts from bands such as Descendents and New Found Glory. But still very Swedish. Anyway, there's lot's of good rock n roll riffs and melodies and the opening song "Fri" is probably the best song they've ever done. 

Reveiw: Pank - Demo

Pank is yet another new swedish band consisting of two very young guys, this wave of kids playing punk gives me hope for the future. This is their first demo which I guess is recorded the old school way in the rehearsal room. The sound isn't very good and the lack of a bass player is obvious, but they're actually looking for one at the moment. 

But anyhow, the sound makes me pretty nostalgic, this is how it sounded when I took my first chords with my band in the early 90's. It is so charming and this is what punk once was all about, the fact that everyone can play. 

When it comes to the music I would compare Pank with oldschool anarcho-punk bands. The musical structure isn't far from a band such as Crass. If it is by purpose or because they are beginners doesn't really matter. This is just pure punkrock with a pissed attitude and without following any rules. I love it. The running time of the 4 songs is around 8 minutes and I enjoy every second. My feeling is that Pank will be a bad ass band in the future after some more practice.

Review: F.I.L - Wake Up

First In Line (F.I.L.) were formed back in 1988 and played for 12 years before they quit. Eight years later they reunited the band and now is their new record "Wake Up" released. And what a record, it is totally brilliant. Fast-paced without any frills just like Gorilla Biscuits and similar bands who play fast and pretty aggressive hardcore. I hadn't heard F.I.L before so I was pleasantly surprised but not amazed since their hometown Linköping has a great history of hardcore. 

I really prefer this kind of straight on NYHC without breakdowns and chug-chuggin'. I guess their influences comes from the BYO Records and Revelation Records bands. And F.I.L are just as good as those bands. Everything is perfect in my opinion, the melodies, the vocals and the lyrics which focuses on equality in different topics. This record contains seven songs and the running time is just over ten minutes, high class hardcore!

Because of the silly band name which obvious sounds better in english (Trash Divers) I actually expected the band to be very young. Therefore it got pretty weird when the music kicked off. With a mix between hardcore and punkrock and a singer who squeezes out guttural sounds... I really don’t get it, although it makes it stand out very much. Unfortunately in a negative way, after all I'm not a fan of this singing style. 

But I don’t want to write Sopdykarna down totally because it gets better and better for each time I play the record. I really appreciate the music and the lyrics are good as well. That makes the foundation both solid and interesting for the future. And I must say that I am curious which path they will choose. There is a grindcore part in the last song "En vidrig morgon" where the vocals fits much better. And I think although it's not grindcore that Sopdykarna can attract those fans. I am not overwhelmed but they still managed to arouse my interest. Give them a chance. 

Review: Brainwasher - Procrustean Bed

I have to admit right from the start that I’m not an expert when it comes to grindcore. Despite of that it is a genre that affects me in a positive way.  It all started when I heard Nasum for the first time and their songs on the compilation Really Fast Vol.9 from 1994. It was like a fist right between my eyes. Then it continued with the almighty Assück which is a band I still listen to every now and then.

But well, this is Brainwasher from Sweden and the tape Procrustean Bed which contains eight tracks. It didn’t took me a long time to like them. I almost demand that grindcore has to be well played and not too noisy, and I think that Brainwasher fulfill my requirements. Of course there are some noisy elements but those elements should actually be there. Let’s move on to one of the best thing about Brainwasher – the vocals, which are totally brutal and the lack of growling makes me delighted. There’s actually no need for growling with a voice like this.

One band that has influenced Brainwasher are Repulsion which can be heard clearly. Im so grateful that they stay on the right side of the border between punk/hc and metal. The running time on this tape is ten minutes divided in 8 tracks. The production isn’t 100% crispy but that is something who make the fist between my eyes even more effective.

Review: Bleak Outlook DC - Kontrapunk

Bleak Outlook DC from Eskilstuna in Sweden have recently released a new CD ”Kontrapunk”. The usual opinion is that a band is never as good as their first record but BODC are different. They just get better and better. It has been fantastic to follow the band and see how their development curve continues to point straight up.  

BODC can be compared to all the classic bands from the british 77-wave, like UK Subs, Menace and SLF but they have their own characteristic sound which contains a bit of darkness, something you can hear in ”The World Is A Dangerous Place”. But despite that the music is catchy and offers some sing-a-long parts. 

Kontrapunk contains of 14 tracks where 9 are previously unreleased. 4 of the tracks were featured on their EP ”Knowledge is bliss”. One of the best songs on this record must be ”Leaders of men”, it’s a song who is significant with the sound of Bleak Outlook DC with strong choruses, nice melodies and thoughtful lyrics. This is high quality punkrock and 30 well invested minutes. Even the last song ”Be my enemy” which is a cover by The Waterboys works very well. I really want to recommend this song for all lovers of pure punkrock.
